Can graduates with bad credit get a mortgage?

Probably. It depends on how bad your credit is though. Somebody with perfect credit has almost all lenders available to them. That means they also have the best interest rates available to them.

As credit worsens, fewer and fewer lenders will be willing to lend to you. With fewer lenders available, the best rates might be unavailable to you.


The worse the credit, the fewer lenders available and typically, the higher the interest rate.

What causes a bad credit score?

Low credit scores are a sign of poor money management. Things that significantly affect your credit score are:

Different lenders will have different rules as to which of the above are acceptable. It can even depend on the time frame, size and reason for the bad credit.

Does a student loan affect graduates’ credit and getting a mortgage?

Student loans don’t actually appear on your credit file. This is because your student loan repayments are taken straight out of your pay, and the amount varies depending on how much you earn.

The mortgage lender will see how much money gets deducted from your monthly pay and adjust what they will lend to you based on that. This has the bonus that if you aren’t yet earning enough to repay your student loan, you won’t be penalised for it.
